What actually is Out of Home advertising?

You may have heard the phrase Out of Home advertising, or its shorter names, OOH and outdoor advertising. But do you actually know what it means?

Like most industries, advertising has a habit of using jargon and assuming everyone knows what it means. Many people don’t, and that can lead to confusion or, at worst, lost business. We try to look at things from our customers’ point of view, though we have been known to slip in a phrase or two that we assume you understand. So, let’s go back to basics.

So, what is it?

Out of Home is an umbrella name used to cover quite a lot of specific forms of advertising.

A simple definition of Out of Home advertising is any advertising you see when you are out and about, rather than at home. Think of the billboard on your commute, the advert on the side of a bus, or the poster at your local bus stop or shopping centre.

The most common formats are:

  • Billboards: large roadside posters and digital screens
  • Buses, trams and taxis: adverts that travel through the places your customers live and work
  • Street furniture: bus shelters, phone kiosks and similar
  • Shopping centres, rail stations and petrol pumps: places where people are already in a buying mindset or have a moment to look

It comes in two main forms. The traditional printed paper posters and digital screens. Traditional paper posters give the advertiser a solus message for the duration of the  booking, whereas with digital screens, your advert is in rotation with several others, but the advert can be updated quickly making it very flexible.

Why choose Out of Home?

Unlike an advert people can scroll past or skip, Out of Home Advertising is simply there. It builds local awareness, keeps your name in front of people day after day, and works well alongside other advertising such as radio, TV and online.

Why CG Advertising?

We are a friendly, independent agency who like to keep things personal. We work directly with the media owners and act as an intermediary, so you get a straight answer from someone who knows the options. We will help you work out what suits your business and your budget, and we will tell you honestly if something isn’t right for you.

Our website is built to make things easy, whether you’ve advertised before or this is your first time.

To do this, we have split the Out of Home options into two sections:

Outdoor

This covers the stationary opportunities including billboards, bus stops, rail stations, shopping centres, petrol pumps and phone kiosks. Find them at cgadvertising.co.uk/outdoor-advertising.

BILLBOARD

Transport

This covers the mobile opportunities including buses, trams, taxis, Ad Vans, Ad Bikes and Walkers. Find them at cgadvertising.co.uk/transport-advertising.

Each page gives you a short overview, pictures so you can see exactly what we mean, and answers to the questions people ask most. That way, when you do get in touch, we can skip the basics and get straight to what will work for you.

At CG Advertising, Out of Home is only part of what we do. We can also help with TV, radio and audio, and newspaper advertising.
